CUCUMBER MINT FRENCH PRESS WATER
We all know that we need to drink more water during the day. Depending on the weather, sometimes that is not my favorite thing to drink. Flavored water can not only be tasty and healthy but it can keep drinking water fun (because plain water sometimes is boring). I like to lightly flavor my waters when I have brunch and always have some sort of flavored water around to enjoy during the day here at home. One of my favorite tools to use for small batches of flavored water is the french press. I know some of you are thinking “but that is what I make coffee in”, but this makes great flavored waters and teas too! The process is simple, you need water, flavoring items (cucumber, mint, etc), a french press and glasses with ice. The combinations that you can flavor your water are endless, you are only limited to your imagination. I have tried many different combinations for different occasions and seasons; since the weather is getting warmer, cucumber and mint is on the top of my list. Cucumber and mint (like shown above) have always been synonymous with refreshing to many people and this recipe is no exception. This combination is refreshing in almost every recipe that you put it in, especially water.
Here is a brief list of other french press waters to do:
- orange and basil
- lemon and thyme
- orange, lemon, pineapple
- strawberry and mint
- grapefruit and rosemary
- green apple and 1 anise star (whole)
- blueberries (halved)
- cherries(halved and pitted)
- kiwi and strawberry
- lime and chili pepper (use 3/4 cup lime wedges to 1 split chili pepper)
Flavored water is always a hit at any meal and great to sip on during the day to get in those recommended 8 glasses. So grab your french press, flavor some water and stay hydrated my friend!
A CHEF’S TIP: this recipe can be applied to most combinations of fruit/veggies and herbs that you wish. I like to use complimenting flavors to the menu that I am serving. The basic ratio (unless noted) is 1 1/2 cup large cut fruit to 1 tsp herbs and then follow recipe below. Also, be sure to not heat your water past 100 degrees, if you do- it will degrade the fruit/veggies and herbs.
MAKES 4 SMALL SERVINGS (multiple accordingly)
1 glass french press
1 1/2 cup organic melon balled cucumber (with the peel)
4 small fresh organic mint leaves
1 cup 100 degree water (use a calibrated thermometer to be sure)
2 cups cold water
4 small highball glasses
Place the cucumber balls and mint in the french press, now add the warm water. Place the plunger in the french press and press just enough so that the cucumber and mint is fully submerged in the heated water. Allow to steep for 30 minutes. Now release the plunger and add the cold water. stir well and let set 2 minutes. Fill your highball glasses with ice. Return the plunger to the french press and gently press the cucumber and mint to the bottom. Pour the flavored water evenly into the ice filled glasses. You can garnish with the cucumber balls and mint leaves if you like. Enjoy!
