Flavoring alcohol and rummied (drunk on alcohol) fruit not only makes a great gift but it warms the soul when it is cold outside. The process is pretty simple and fool proof yet the flavors can be complex and a crowd pleaser. Every year at the holidays (and sometimes other times) I like to flavor whiskey and rummy fruit. The great thing about rummied fruit is that you can drink the “rummy” after you eat the fruit or vice versa….Here is my recipe for WHISKEY CHERRIES—-SALUTE!!
MAKES 2 CUPS RUMMIED FRUIT and ABOUT 1/2 LITER OF RUMMY
1 cup dried unsulphered organic cherries
2 1/2 cups of favorite whiskey
1/2 tsp. natural vanilla extract
In a clean large recycled glass bottle (the one you will be storing in), place the dried cherries in. Top with your whiskey and vanilla, shake well and seal the bottle. Allow to set out at room temperature out of direct sunlight for 2 weeks, shake up every day. When done, serve or you can store up to 1 month in the refrigerator.
NOTE: the whiskey cherries are great by themselves, over natural vanilla bean ice cream, top with a dollop of vanilla greek yogurt or baked in a cobbler. WARNING: This is an alcoholic beverage and dessert– so keep out of reach of minors.
